Dogs are the Panda's Best Friend Too!

Giant Pandas are notorious for being hard to breed in captivity, but its even worse trying to release a captive-bred panda into the wild. These poor giants are left unable to defend themselves and all that hard work trying to save their species can be demolished by the next wandering predator. Luckily, by observing dogs panda's can learn to live in the wild and how to flee or fight when a predator comes around looking for a snack.

I wonder what pandas could learn from cats!

Understanding Your Cat

I've heard a lot of complaints about cats, especially somehow ending up perpetually surrounded by dog lovers. I'm an equal-opportunist, I love dogs and cats, but I think cats definitely get the short end of the stick.

While some say cats are moody and distant, I prefer the terms "complex" and "contemplative." Right?

Here is some insight on the labyrinth that is the cat's mind.

The truth is cats are still ruled by thier instinct to survive.

A new chair in a room to us is just a chair, but for a cat we're changing thier enviroment. We're changing how vulnerable the cat is in certain places of the house. So when you put that new chair in the middle of room you can be darn sure that your cat's gonna know how tall it is, if it can be jumped on, if they will fit underneath it and how far it is from every other piece of furniture and hiding spot they have.

That is why new things makes cats as curious as.. well.. cats!

Thinking of Pet Adoption? Rent First!

Rent a dog for a few hours or even a weekend.

This is a great way to try out different breeds, or to see if your family can handle the responsibility. Each dog is therapy certified and is fully trained, I think the only problem would be letting them go!

So far, I've only found FlexPetz to service in the USA with locations in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. But don't worry! They're expanding to Manhattan, San Francisco, London in UK, Boston, and Washington DC in 2008.

Hero Dogs Rescue Toddler from Drowning

December 13, 2007 a Rottweiler cross and a Staffordshire bull terrier reportedly dragged a toddler from a dam near Mackay, Queensland. Police say the drag marks in the dirt and small bite marks on the toddler's wrists indicate that the dogs dragged the toddler to safety.

Although, I would like to know how a toddler ends up even close to a body of water without supervision, I applaud these two dogs for their heroic deed!

Dog Training Done! Now What?

Teach them some manners!

We love our pets, we make sure they're in good health, that they look good and that they smell good. But what's the use if they're stuck inside all day?

The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette teaches owners and their dogs how to interact in every social setting. So owners can enjoy life with a nice well behaved canine by their side, instead of constantly worrying what they're doing at home, or having to tug at a leash every second.

This is a book that will definitely benefit dog owners, dogs and their friends!

Stressed about the holidays? So is your pet!

Holidays are great, but they are also time consuming, expensive and stressful. During this time of year it's important to remember that your pet feels what you feel. Here are some of the triggers of holiday stress for your pets and what you can do:

1) Hectic schedules and strangers visiting the house:

- Put them in a gated area distracted with a toy, video or get them a sitter

- In severe cases there are pet Xanax and Valium

2) Fear of Packages:

- Desensitize your pet: lay one or two packages in front of them to get them used to them and to train them that these are not chewing toys

Remember:

Don't coddle your pet when he/she is frightened, this teaches them to act fearfully for approval, but don't scold them either. Stress is usually the result of thier everyday routine being disrupted. To give them some structutre tell them to sit or stay, then give them a treat. It's important that they know how to behave in all situations throughout the year.

Hero Dog!

Seventy-seven year old Pauline Muggleton in Dorset fell in some thick undergrowth Saturday afternoon. After unsuccessful attempts by a search team and a helicopter with heat seeking equipment to find Pauline, it was none other but the Dorset search hound who found her!

The Sun reports that Mrs Muggleton’s daughter Sally Humberstone said “A couple of hours later and she would have been dead.”

Good boy!

PETA vs Olsen Twins

Wow. PETA sure does love a good fight! First the AKC and now Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen!

PETA's Side: “Fur Is Worn by Beautiful Animals and Ugly People”

In reaction to the Olsen twins wearing fur and using it in thier fashion line: “No one would argue that Mary-Kate and Ashley could use some meat on their bones, but the last thing they need is hair on their backs.”

And the hating doesn't stop there! Here is PETA's website dedicated to trashing "Hairy-Kate" and "Trashley" Olsen.

Have you drunk your haterade today?

Sugar Gliders, Hottest New Pet or Bad Fad?

What is a Sugar Glider? They are pocket-size flying possums that love the sweet stuff. But there are arguments whether or not these pets are ideal for everybody. I'll present both sides of the story, and let you decide:

Sweet: They bond with the owner very quickly, and love being near your heart beat or entwined around your thumb.

Sour: They are wild animals that glide from branch to branch and are not made for living in small cages for hours alone.

Sweet: As with any pet, you have to clean the cage and them, and just as with their size, their droppings are very small.

Sour: They are, let's say "blessed" with healthy, very healthy sweat glands.

Sweet: They adjust thier sleeping patterns to accomodate thier owners

Sour: They are nocturnal, so when you're ready to doze off they're getting ready to party

Sweet:They can't survive outside, making them perfect pets

Sour: It is feared they could spread unknown diseases to local animals

Made your decision?

In Springfield, LA a 28-year-old woman Ethel Shannon Mckinney and her boyfriend Audie Ray Crisswell (34) shot at two dog owners after a harsh exchange of words over Mckinney's broken Christmas decorations outside of her mobile home. One man was shot in the upper torso and arm, and the other was wounded only in his arm.

Adopting a Celebrity Dog

I read an interesting story this weekend about a beautiful Golden retriever that had been traveling up and down a six mile section of Highway 10, here in Los Angeles, nursing a broken leg for nearly TWO months! Highway patrol, concerned citizens and animal rescuers had attempted numerous rescues but to no avail. Then one lucky patrol officer was able to coax the retriever they had since named "Oleander," into the back of his patrol car and off they sped to a Riverside County Department of Animal Services shelter in Banning.
The interesting part of this story is that within two days for announcing that Oleander was up for adoption, this media-hyped puppy had received 90 calls of willing parties and even 10 calls of people claiming to be the dog's rightful owner!
What's sad about this situation is that Oleander is just one of thousands of pets in shelters right now, and simply because she was on the news, people responded. It was her celebrity that people wanted.

An interesting quote I found in the LA Times, "Getting an animal on television is a guaranteed adoption," said Ed Boks, the general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services, which runs six city shelters. "I think it has to do, perhaps, with an affinity with fame. A lot of folks want to touch that celebrity status through adopting the animal that everyone now wants."
I suppose it really is just another case of "A crowd attracts a crowd."
Where does this obsessive celebrity mindset come from? Frankly it's all kind of lost on me. And that's a funny thing to say when you live in Tinseltown - Hollywood, California.

How to Keep your Pets Safe during the Holidays

Don't let this cute picture fool you! While we all love the holidays and our pets, sometimes the two can be hazardous to your pet's health when put together.

Holiday decorations that can make your pets sick:
-Mistletoe
-Holly
-Christmas tree stands that contain fertilizer
-Lilies
-wiring of holiday lights out where pets may be able to chew on it
-Poinsettias

Food to keep away from your pets

-Chocolate-toxic
-Macadamia nuts-also toxic
-Turkey, chicken or duck bones: may cause choking
-Onions: These can cause heart problems when eaten in large quantities
-Raisins and grapes: can cause renal failure if eaten in large quantities
-Alcohol: make sure its not left out where pets can get a sip of it.

So be careful and have a safe and fun holiday!

Television For Dogs

Feel guilty when you leave the house no more!

The Dog Companion series is a set of DVD's designed specifically for dogs that are left alone in the house for long hours ( such as the time it takes you to go to work, hate work, be bored with work and come back home).

Just don't expect to be able to have a nice movie night. They have no specific plot, and the camera angles and content are arranged with the dog's point of view in mind.

PETA Fights AKC: Round 2

Ding Ding!

In November a California state wide sterilization bill barely passed and is now on its way to Senate. This bill would mean owners must spay or neuter thier dogs and cats by the time they are 4 months old, or pay a $500 fine.

PETA's Side: This would reduce the thousands of animals in shelters.

AKC's Side: This bill would do little to stop "backyard breeders" ( think of them as the black market on animals). Plus, they've threatened to pull thier Annual Dog Show from California and with them, all that publicity, tourism and money California gets from this internationally televised event. Ouch!
